Like everyone in Asheville, this October the folks at Echo Mountain Recording (@echomountainrecording) had their world upended by Hurricane Helene. However, though they had to reschedule a number of sessions after their water supply was knocked out, Echo Mountain studios were spared structural damage from the storm. In fact, they’ve bounced back and are again booking sessions! Echo Mountain features a George Augsperger-designed control room in a retrofitted 1920s Methodist church. They’ve recorded hundreds of records for musicians from around the nation, on major labels and indies, including many North Carolina artists: American Aquarium, Iron & Wine, Mipso, Mount Moriah, Sylvan Esso, Tift Merritt, Megafaun, The Avett Brothers, and Watchhouse, to name a few! In this clip, listen as they describe the studio’s role as a bridge between Western Carolina’s musical past and present, and detail the inspirations to be found in Asheville, inside and outside their facilities.
