Durham rapper @gyamazawa (G Yamazawa) first burst into public consciousness in 2017 with a viral video for his song "North Cack." The track from the LP SHOUTS TO DURHAM found him repping a number of Tar Heel culinary touchstones, from barbecue and cornbread to his parents’ Japanese restaurant Yamazushi. Yamazawa's flows are highly lyrical, filled with multi-lingual wordplay and cultural crossings of meaning, but ride the beat so steadily no boom bap fan comes away disappointed. Multi-talented, Yamazawa's also a poet and a filmmaker, with his documentary BECOMING YAMAZUSHI earning critical plaudits and a home in PBS's American Masters series (2022).
