It’s easy to see why Melvin Crispell III’s (@thethirdmelvincrispell) “God Is…” IS nominated for a Grammy (@recordingacademy) for Best Gospel Performance/Song this year! Crispell III’s voice on the James Cleveland standard flows mellifluous and sweet, even while it ranges to notes most singers would kill to be able to hit. The song packs all the power of old-fashioned gospel – delivering comfort and consolation for all those caught out in the storms of life. Crispell III, a Charlotte native, has been in such storms himself, having lost both parents by the age of 18. He’s been able to channel the pain of that loss into his music, simultaneously bringing some peace to listeners and upholding his family’s musical traditions in the process.
