This Black Music Month, we’d like to direct your attention to two upcoming programs at the North Carolina Museum of Art (@ncartmuseum) that examine the enduring influence of African American musical expression in our state and beyond. June 27 – “They Not Like Us” Dr. Guthrie Ramsey (@ramseymusic) presents an immersive, multimedia lecture-performance that explores Black music as both an aesthetic tradition and a locus of social meaning. Through historical analysis, live music, and spoken word, the event interrogates the evolving soundscape of Black identity and resistance. June 28 – “Lift Every Voice: Community-Wide Sing-Along” Curated by Dr. Tiffany Bennett-Cornelous, this participatory experience brings together community voices in performance and reflection. Drawing from spirituals and civil rights anthems, it honors music’s role as a vehicle for collective memory, cultural transmission, and communal healing.
