The North Carolina Heritage Awards began in 1989. A program of the North Carolina Arts Council, the Heritage Awards honor outstanding traditional artists in the state. The award has been presented to craftspeople of all stripes, from quilters to stickball carvers, potters to blacksmiths, boatbuilders to herbalists. But musicians have been the single largest share of recipients, and that's a testament to the strength and diversity of the aural traditions of our state. To celebrate the many fine musicians who have received a Heritage Award, CHNCMO has put together a deep playlist. Chronologically organized, the mix samples honorees' work and spans from 1989 through 2025. The next NC Heritage Awards will be conferred at a public ceremony on June 18, 2027. 🔗 Link in bio to listen!
